East Ham House

East Ham House is a 3-storey staggered extension to a Victorian terraced property. The extension provides much-needed additional living space, and allows natural light to flood into the building. The neutral material palette has been carefully selected to produce a bold and contemporary aesthetic, whilst also improving the character of the host dwelling. The ivory colour bricks feature corbelled headers to provide three-dimensional protrusions and visual interest to the blanked out elevations. The third floor dormers are clad in grey zinc.

“The brick detailing provides an ever changing façade throughout the day, and at different times of the year”.
Michael Serginson, Architect

Existing building. The Victorian terraced property is typical for the East Ham area. The ground floor location of the bathroom compromised the layout. The client brief was to create additional space, flooded with natural light, and a more convenient relationship between habitable rooms.

Visualisation. The view presents the concept design to capture the effect of light on the external brickwork.

Design iterations. Various options for the elevational treatment were considered.

Site progression. Our role included supervision on-site during the construction stage.

Brick selection. Various samples were tested before confirming the brick specification.

Window selection. Careful consideration was taken in specifying the front elevation windows to maintain a traditional appearance to suit the streetscape.

Sketch plans. Design workshops resulted in various alterations to reach the optimum layout.

External wall construction. The external build-ups are designed to exceed minimum thermal performance under the Building Regulations (U-values)

Taking shape. The vision of the project begins to become a reality.

“We have just installed an elevated metal grid walkway from the house to the deck. Thought you’d like a shot showing the brick shadows on the rear elevation. Looks great!”
Peter Lange, Client.

Connection to the outdoors. The zinc-clad dormer is accompanied by a frameless glazed Juliet-style balcony providing a visual connection to the outdoors and maximum natural light into the loft space.
