Woodland Retreat: Hemel Hempstead

For the Senses has been commissioned to prepare a pre-application enquiry submission for the proposal of a low-density residential development in Hemel Hempstead.

The site is within the historic hunting grounds of Berkhamsted Castle. The castle was originally a defensive position, using the natural topography and timber fortifications to create a secure environment.

Our intention is to use the narrative of the Retreat as inspiration in a positive way. The narrative for the site is to create a woodland retreat where residents can enjoy an intimate and private community setting. Surrounded by trees, the site will feel connected to nature.

Traditional Form – Modern Elements

The architectural concept is based on traditional forms to help create a village atmosphere comprising 9 x detached dwellings.

Asymmetrical pitched roofs with slate roofs would be in keeping with local properties and also assist in maintaining views across the site. The buildings will be made using natural materials such as timber cladding, slate tiles, and brickwork, forming the aesthetic. The design will explore the introduction of modern additions with large windows, poured concrete chimneys, and feature detailing for a contemporary feel.

Pedestrianised landscaping will help create a sense of community and encourage neighbours to interact in communal green areas.

A Woodland Retreat

The proposal intends to harmonise with the natural landscape to create a positive transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. Large windows and rooflights will provide natural light and a connection to the outdoors. Attractive views and daylight are essential to help create a healthy environment in which to reside.

The Retreat will have its own character where materiality is as important as dimensional space.

The proposal creates an intimate woodland retreat with landscaping designed to ensure a private setting. The dwelling’s orientation is north to south to take advantage of solar gain and the views down the hill and across the open countryside.

With the stepped change in level within each property, excavation is limited,  reducing the overall appearance of the building’s height.

The pre-application enquiry has been submitted to the Dacorum Borough Council, and we will provide updates on the project progress in the coming weeks.
